Ray Chan, age 24, is involved in a multiple car accident. Mr. C was wearing a seatbelt; air bag was activated. Mr. C was airlifted to the nearest trauma 1 hospital. Injuries included 3 broken ribs, broken sternum, broken left femur, contusions, open scalp wound of 4 cm. N/G tube was inserted. No previous medical history. (Topics covered: calculating basic IV drip rates on an infusion pump, determining hours an IV will run, adding medications to continuous IVs, enteral feeding, recording IV intake.)
Medication order: ceftazidime 1.25 g in 100 mL IVPB every 8 hours, infuse over 30 minutes.
Calculate the doses (round the infusion rates to the nearest whole number):
Ceftazidime. Supply: Available: 2 g vial, reconstitution yields 2 g/10 mL. How many mL to add to the IV? What is the infusion rate on the pump?
Ceftazidime 2g in 10 ml
Need ceftazidime 1.25
=total amount in ml×required amount/2
=10 ml×1.25/2
=6.25ML
add 6.25 ml in 100 ml
B) infusion rate
= Volume /time in minute ×drop factor
=100ml /30 mnt ×15 (drop factor)
=50 drops /mnt
