Endocrine system is a chemical messenger system that functions with the help of hormones secreted by internal glands. In the human being major endocrine glands are thyroid gland and adrenal glands.

Functions of endocrine system includes:

1. Metabolism

2. Sexual function and reproduction

3. Metabolism

4. Blood pressure

5. Heart rate

6. Appetite

7. Sleeping and body temperature

These all are carried out by the help of many glands. They are

1. Hypothalamus: it secretes many hormones that control pituitary gland. This gland helps in regulation of sleep-wake cycle, body temperature amd appetite.

2. Pituitary gland:. Situated below hypothalamus, hormones secreted by this gland regulate growth and reproduction.

3. Pineal gland: Regulate sleep-wake cycle

4. Thyroid gland: situated in the neck, responsible for metabolism

5. Parathyroid gland: situated in the lung, regulate calcium level in blood and bone.

6. Thymus: produces hormone needed for development of T-cells

7. Adrenal glands; situated above each kidneys,produces hormones responsible for regulating functions such as blood pressure,heart rate and stress response.

8. Pancreas: Situated in the abdomen, responsible for regulating blood sugar level with the help of hormones like insulin, glucagon .
