About 40 million children around the globe are obese under five years of age. Childhood obesity leads to complications such as non insulin dependent diabetes, hypercholestrolemia, arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular, renal and hepatic disorders later in the adulthood. Body mass index (BMI) is the weight of an individual in kilogram divided by height of the individual in meter square. It is considered to be normal if the range is between 18 to 22. Over weight is defined one standard deviation from normal age and sex and obesity is defined as two standard deviation of body mass index according to age and sex. Obesity is considered if the BMI is more than 30 and more than 40 BMI is considered to be severly obese. Growth charts are used to measure the nutritional status of a child. Other tests include waist to hip ratio and skin fold measurements. In this modern world of energy foods rich in sugar and fats and decreased physical activity contribute to the occurence of childhood obesity. Children choose foods which are processed that lack required nutrition. Diagnostic evaluation such as blood sugar and cholestrol levels, throid function and kidney function tests could revel the complications if any. In order to treat this condition, children should be taught to take foods such vegetables, salads, fruits, nuts and legumes rich in both macro and micro nutrients. Limit the sugar intake and follow regular exrecise at 20 minutes would reduce the chance of childhood obesity. Drinking more fluids including water also helps to burn fat that help in weightloss.
