How do people communicate? Provide examples of verbal and nonverbal communication. How do you communicate nonverbally?
In what way can knowledge of nonverbal communication help your communication with others?
Answer:---
How do people communicate?
Right from the dawn of civilizations, there was a constant need
between human being to communicate. Communication can be broadly
categorized into
Verbal communication
Non Verbal communication
Verbal communication is the use of sounds (in general) and words
(in particular) which when used coherently and grammatically
becomes a language to express oneself. Hence verbal communication
is possible even if the parties are unable to see each other by
merely hearing or reading.
Verbal communication can in turn be divided into a) Written
communication (anything which is in black and white) and b) Oral
communication. As expected in both the cases we use words but are
primarily the output hands or throat.
Verbal communication is often correlated with the paralanguage such
as the style of speaking, tone, pitch, pause, intonation, degree of
emotion coating etc and thus the same set of words could convey
different meanings if used using different paralanguage.
Nonverbal communication refers to the communication, signals sent
and received without use of the words. It could be in the form of
facial expressions, body movements, gestures, postures etc.
Provide examples of verbal and nonverbal communication.
Examples:
Verbal communication
Written : Email, SMS, chat, letters, pamphlets, brochures,
contracts
Oral: Simple talk, lectures, Video chats etc
Non verbal communication
Facial expressions (Instead of saying a yes/no one could nod his
head, body postures (different angles pointing to degrees of
interest in the conversation), eye contact (Interest/Disinterest in
conversation, Confidence levels, truthfulness)
In what way can knowledge of nonverbal communication help your
communication with others?
It is often said (and has been proved) that non verbal
communication convey more than the verbal communication. It is
attributed to the fact that non verbal communication is spontaneous
and uncontrollable and thus more truthful. Verbal communication
goes through multiple levels of filtering and thus by the time it
is delivered, it has already been cloaked and has lost its’ true
intention.
Hence any person needs to pay equal attention towards these
signals. An xmaple is yawning which hints as disinterest in the
conversation. A speaker if notices yawning in the audience, can
change the topic to something more interesting so that the audience
is still locked in and the seminar is successful. In a discussion,
the moderator can read the non verbal signs and understand which
member to be toned down to kept h discussion civilized, on a
playfield a captain or a coach can read the non verbal signs to
replace the players or to analyze the mental plan of the opposition
players so on and so forth.
Analyze your listening skills and abilities. What do you need to
improve?
Listening skills are very important to have a meaningful
conversation. {You can write something like this}. I feel I have
decent listening skills where I pay attention to the speaker, try
to lock-in with his ideas, chain of thoughts and analysis. However
during this whole listening process, I sometimes miss out the
contradictions, disagreements that I comes to my mind to be put
across in the end(which generally happens after say 5-10 minutes).
Hence I have this restlessness of trying to interrupt the speaker
before I forget the point. But I am working on it to create a
mental sticky where I jot the points and put them across in the
end, thereby avoiding interruptions to the speaker.
Also I sometimes believe/disbelieve something so staunchly that at
the start of the discussion itself I completely shut myself out of
it. I feel it is completely wrong and I should pay attention for a
reasonable time before I decide to sign out of the discussion. It
could be due to my age, impatience but I am working on it.
Thank You
