Please view the you-tube videos on Week 2 moodle page-they cover various topics about nursing and can be included in this discussion board. Some include some television show clips that have nurses and also interviews with people on the street about what nursing is. Hopefully this will give you all a better picture of how the public views nursing. There is also a video about the struggles of minority students and nursing. My hope, is that by the end of this course you will be a strong voice for nursing, with the goal of sharing who nurses are, and why we do what we do! The questions below are discussion starters and you do not have to answer all of them-choose what interests you to discuss! Remember, your initial post can be 300-500 words, basically about 1-2 paragraphs. What do you think nursing is? What has most influenced how you see nursing? How do you react to shows that have nurses on them? How do you think this can affect the view of nursing that the general public will have? Have you had family or friends question why you would want to become a nurse? Have you had someone tell you to become a doctor instead? What can we as nurses and nursing students do to positively or negatively affect the image of nursing? This is more of a "personal" discussion and I do not expect you to bring in resources, unless you want to. If you have not already done so, please review the rubric for discussion posts-they need to be "substantial"- have depth and your answers need to be substantial and carry forward the conversation.
Nursing is care for an individual who is physically, mentally ill. Nurse cares for all age groups right from newborn to elderly. Nursing is determining the needs of the ill/ diseases individual and not the unmet needs of the individual. Society views nursing very differently. It rather takes the nursing for granted somewhere like a maid who is supposed to carry out each and every activity.Nursing was defined , described as a noble profession ealier but nowadays it has somewhere going through bad phases.
Shows does not show what has to be shown. It unnecessary focus on the other futile things. For e.g the main area of focus is the quality and sincerity in the type of care to be given and not her physical posture and appearance that soothes the patient.
It is because of this media only that the approach to nursing has changed from the public view. No wonders it is still considered to be noble profession in some parts of the world but in majority of area the condition is not good.
Yes I do had my friends and family questioned me about choosing this profession instead of being a doctor. In Nursing field there are innumerable courses you can opt for any on of them. But nobody tells you that at the end you will land up in becoming a bed side nurse only. No matters you do a diploma course or an degree course you will have to do bed making once you enter the patient room. This is the truth that we all as nurses should agree to.
Finally coming to what we can do is just try to build our own image as a good proficient, knowledgeable, efficient nurse so that nobody overpowers you not even a doctor. We should have answers for every ifs and buts and should be able to challange every health care professional. Somewhere in our knowledge we need to excel. Please do not take these opinions wrongly as these put based on the understanding of the field over these years and let's hope with the positive and bright future of all nurses worldwide.
