Ethics of Euthanasia about The The Belgian Twins
In Belgium, two deaf twins, were granted to be killed by legal euthanasia. Both of them were 45, whose name was Marc and Eddy Verbessem, who came from the village of Putte. Both of them were born as dead and came to known that they would soon turn blind as well, and due to this they asked for mercy killing. Their elder brother, Dirk Verbessem, explained that both of his younger brothers had been living together throughout their adult lives and were not able to communicate with anyone outside. For them, both of them were their world. When the news broke that they would be going blind as well, the thought of not being able to see each other, was something that they adult bear at all. They were not able to interact with anybody else and when a person realises that they would also be kept away from the only part of life that is meaningful to them, they lose the will to live as well.
For their entire life, they lived together in a flat working as a cobbler and communicating with signs that only the two of them and the immediate family could understand. They were independent enough to cook their own food and carry out their regular household duties. If they grew blind, they would be completely dependent on someone else, for any of their chores or have to be out in an institution , which was not an acceptable fact by them. Hence, they did not want to chose such a life. They persuaded their parents to comply through Belgium’s euthanasia laws, so that their lives could be ended. Their search was long, as almost two years were spent to look for a medical institution that would administer their wish, by injecting the lethal injection.
Euthanasia means mercy killing or the ability to grant death by medical procedures in. Person’s request of showing that their life is not worth living. If seen through ethical principles, this complies with utilitarian ethics, which says that any act performed should give happiness to self and the immediate people affected by the act. In this case as well, the twins were happy with their decision. They had congenital deafness which was turning into blindness due to glaucoma which was genetically formed. Moe, they also had other medical problems as well. Their parents were also agreeing at the last moment, after they realised what the life of both the brothers would become, if blindness would have hit them. Yes, according to kantian ethics this is wrong, since humans do not have the right to decide about death or life and its only god’s decision, but according to consequentialism, this is correct.
