cellular adaptation is the ability of the cells to react or change themselves accordingly in case of harsh environmental conditions , stress etc. If not adaptation then it goes for cell death via apoptosis or necrosis.

Four morphological adaptation includes atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, metaplasia.

Atrophy is decrease in cell size. if enough cells of any organ goes through antrophy the entire organ could shrink.

Hypertrophy is exactly the ooposite of atrophy, where the cell size increases. even this might lead to change in size of an organ, make it larger in size.

Hyperplasia is increase in cellular number by mitosis.

Metaplasia in the adaptation where a type of cell is replaced by another less differentiated cell, it is a reversible process done by stem cell reprograming.

** theres another term call Dysplasia , which is abnormal changes in cell shape , size , organisation etc. It i basically idsorgamised hyperplasia.

So the beauty in cellular adaptation basically is that, that a cell doesnt have to die even in adverse conditions. it can just change itself and modify itself and survive, change its own fate.
