Medication administration is the most important and prime duty
of a nurse in patient care. Human errors are possible in medication
administration.In order to prevent this a standard of six rights of
medication administration is practiced worldwide to reduce and
prevent medication error.
The six rights are
- Administration of medication to the right patient by ensuring
the correct name and patient ID
- Administer the right medication by checking the order of the
provider
- Administration of the right dose by cross checking with the
prescription or the doctor's order
- Administer the medication in the right route as per order to
ensure right time action
- It is highly important to administer the medication at right
time before ,after or with food
- After administration of medication right documentation has to
be done to prevent legal consequences, reference for other
healthcare professionals and prevent double dose or wrongful
administration.
