Medication administration is the most important and prime duty of a nurse in patient care. Human errors are possible in medication administration.In order to prevent this a standard of six rights of medication administration is practiced worldwide to reduce and prevent medication error.

The six rights are

  1. Administration of medication to the right patient by ensuring the correct name and patient ID
  2. Administer the right medication by checking the order of the provider
  3. Administration of the right dose by cross checking with the prescription or the doctor's order
  4. Administer the medication in the right route as per order to ensure right time action
  5. It is highly important to administer the medication at right time before ,after or with food
  6. After administration of medication right documentation has to be done to prevent legal consequences, reference for other healthcare professionals and prevent double dose or wrongful administration.
