TALWIN
Talwin-the pharmacological name is pentazocine belong to the category of narcotic analgesic.
Therapeutic uses of Talwin
it is used for the relief of acute and chronic pain of moderate to severe pain .Also used as preanesthetic medication therapy.
Action of Talwin
It is a synthetic analgesic with analgesic potency. It antagonise the opioid mu receptor.it also has sedative action.
Administration
:subcutaneous /intramuscular _IM is preferred to subcutaneous route when frequent injection over an long period of time, observe injection site for irritability and inflammation.
:intravenous route _preparation for direct adminsteration _give diluted or undiluted with 1ml of sterile water for injection for each 5mg.Administer slowly at a rate of 5mg over 6 sec.
Intraction
Drug_alcohol and other CNS depressants add to CNS depression. Narcotic analgesic may precipitate narcotic withdrawal symptoms.
Nursing implications /evaluation of drug effect
Assessment :
Monitor therapeutic effect of drug by patient verbalization
Assess the drug tolerance to analgesic
Assess for psychological and physical dependence and addiction.
Assess for acute withdrawal symptoms
Patient and family education
:educate patient to avoid driving and other strainous activities until response to drug is known.
:do not discontinue drug abruptly following long period of time it leads to withdrawal symptoms.
:avoid breastfeeding while taking this drug
:do not take the medicine with out prescription of doctors order.
:take the correct dose, over dose cause serious health problems .
