A. Consider the use of Deadly Force by police officers in
light of all the media attention presented. Do you believe the
media's portrayal of the force used by police officers is justified
or unjustified? What would you do to change, if anything, the
negative perception attributed to police officers by the media to
the public?
After you respond to the question with your opinion, in
a few sentences respond to the two classmates opinion if you agree
with their post. ex... I agree becuse so so so for each
B. "The media has made police brutality a topic that
brings up a lot of controversy in today's society , their negative
coverage on these incidents leads the general public to believe
that law enforcement officers are using deadly force unnecessarily.
The media's portrayal is not justified because numerous studies
have shown that police officers do not overuse deadly force and
most officers are not likely to utilize deadly force with a firearm
throughout their careers. I would change the media's take on the
incidents by getting police officers to speak on their behalf as
well as try and make the media's overall tone more neutral than
anything, I think that making the information on the prevalence of
an officer using deadly force public would also change some
people's opinion on the topic."
C. "I believe the media’s portrayal of force used by officers is unjustified because they don’t say both sides of the story. Sometimes the media reports fake news, and overexaggerates because of what they say, how they say it, and maybe they even hide some information. Which is why I don’t really believe what they say. Also, according to the book, statistics indicate that police officers do not overuse force. Police will only use deadly force if they are provoked. For example, when someone resists arrest, the only way police can calm the person is by using force.
What I would do to change the negative perception is release the footage recorded by either the body cam or the vehicle camera. Let the officer say his side of the story and explain what happened. I would also change how the media portrays police officers. Instead of creating bias, they can show the positive side of police officers which can change the way the public sees an officer."
A) Media arrives on hot news and with the competition present on the media world today, each of them try to bring in shocking news, exciting news and breaking news. One of the important aspects of creating the need stories is that, they make it more novel, mix their own imagination and add spice the news items. Reporting the incidents of police using force comes under this category where more adjectives and adverbs are added to the news report in order to look like the police themselves started the riot or attack on the people. Protecting law and order is the responsibility of the police officers and no police officer can act on his own. They get orders from the rulers who order the police to act on a certain way. So, media can't blame the police for using force because of they don't use force a bigger riot may spread and more people would be in trouble. Thus it becomes very important for the media to be very neutral without aiming at their profit alone or improving their TRB rate.
B) I agree with my colleague because media should behave in a socially responsible manner. Reporting in a manner that would bring a division between the public and the police should be avoided.
C) I agree with my colleague that media portray the police department negatively in order to make the news more sensational. They also do this in order to maintain their position in the media market.
