American Nurses Association code of ethics provision 5 states the nurse owes the same duty to self as to others including the responsibility to preserve integrity and safety, to maintain competence and to continue personal and professional growth.

It include the following :

1. Moral self respect : It is the worth and dignity to all person irrespective of their personal quality.

2. Professional growth and maintenance of competence : It is essential to maintain the high standard of nursing practice. Professional growth can be achieved by in service education, continuing education, licensure and certification. Nurse should have adequate knowledge regarding the current trends, situation and technology of nursing practice. Nursing is profession is to be updated. Competence evaluated by feed back of patient, peer review and self assessment. It is very essential to improve the quality of care.

3. Wholeness of character : Nursing is a profession. Each nurses have their own personal attributes however the nurses professional behavior should based on the moral values and ethics. Nurse should behave only within the boundary of professional and moral behavior.

4. Preservation of integrity : Nurses remains consistent with their professional and personal value. Sometimes integrity may be threatened due to verbal abuse from patients and coworkers falsy record, withhold information etc. Nurses should assertive and she may express the conscientious objections to participation where the activities or interventions inappropriate for patients. Nurse should responsible for the patient safety.
