what are important considerations for someone who is
receiving enteral or parenteral nutrition
Considerations during enteral or parenteral nutrition include;
1. Wash the hands before handling TPN solution, supplies or IV sets.
2. Follow strict asceptic techniques while dressing change or IV tubing change
3. Refrigerate TPN solution when it is not in use
4. Before using warm the TPN solution to room temperature
5. Weight, CBC, electrolyte and BUN should be checked often for patient receiving TPN
6. Blood glucose level should be checked atleast every six hours to assess complications of TPN like hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
7. Strict monitoring of intake and out put chart
8. Watch for complications of TPN administration like dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia etc
9. Closely monitor vital signs and temperature of the patient during TPN therapy
10. Properly flush the enteral tube before and after the feeling
11. Provide upright position instead of supine or prone position for enteral feeding to reduce the risk of aspiration.
12. Always check NG tube placement before giving each feed.
