Question 1
a) The terms “Efficiency” and “Effectiveness” are extremely important to the success of any construction project and the site manager. In your own words define and distinguish the meaning of the two terms with suitable examples with respect to a construction site in the UK.
b) Apply the two terms in your role as a construction site manager and illustrate how you would achieve the right balance between the two.
c) What other aspect of your work as a site manager in a construction site would you rank at the top of all other issues/activities/tasks and why?
Ans: a) Efficiency – Efficiency is the completing the task or given work with less time and with least complication and with the greater result.
Effectiveness – it is the capability of producing the desired result.
For Example : For the construction of our present project we want our own brick making plant because as the project is very big it required thousands of bricks daily and moreover it should be completed within the given time. For this we have taken some quotations from three vendors who are producing the bricks at our place with some x cost per brick. Based on the requirement obtained quotations from X,Y and Z. The X is the one who quoted the least price but based on the past work experience he is not has not efficiency to meet our requirements. Y can meet the daily requirement that he has efficiency to meet the requirements but the effectiveness of bricks is not that much good they don’t have enough strength and moreover they are broking for every 100 bricks 5 bricks are broking. And finally the Z has 95% efficiency to meet our requirement he can produce 950 bricks daily if we want 1000 but effectiveness of the bricks were too good. As per the above he is technically sound and have both efficiency and effectiveness.
Effectiveness = Efficiency + Quality + Appreciation
By this the Z has the over all effectiveness in the production of bricks.
b) Efficiency:
1) The main reason for the getting efficiency in work is workers and contractors and subcontractors.
2) If they will work properly and timely then the work will complete within the specified time without any delay.
3) For this we have to maintain good relations with all workers , contractors and suppliers. And we should have that efficiency to make them work.
4) By giving wages daily and by fulfilling the their basic needs we can get our work done.
5) By maintaining the good relationship with them will be the main factors to complete the work within the time.
Effectiveness:
If our work should get done we can effectively communicate with the workers they can understand our instructions.
And for effective work done the coordination at all levels are very important.
When ever there arise any problem that should be solved with in a minutes other wise the work get delayed.
And finally I will be available to all they can come to me at any time for any issue which I will try to solve with in a day. Which will help us to increase the relationship.
