NG tube is a nasogastric tube where a flexible rubber tube is inserted into the stomach via nose. Feeds are give this tube called Ryles tube. It is also used to remove the contents from the stomach in case of poisoning.
It is used for short term nutritional support.
PEG tube is a tube which is passed directly into stomach bypassing the mouth, esophagus. It is passed via endoscope through a procedure called Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy . This procedure is done when there is dysphagia, bowel cancer, severe burns.
PEG tube feeding steps :
1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
2. Position the patient to sitting or standing position.
3. Clamp the tube and remove the cap of the PEG tube.
4. Place a syringe and fill in with water to flush the tube .
5. Allow the water to drip in.
6. Clamp the tube when the water is almost over.
7. Put the feed and unclamp so that the feed goes in.
8. Repeat the procedure until the patient feels full or is recommended by physician.
9. Make the patient sit for 20 to 30 minutes or walk slowly after the feed as per convenience of the patient. This prevents the regurgitation of food back to the lungs.
