I would like process and details for the insertion process of a NG tube, including what to do before, during, and after, with verification of placement. All details are appreciated. Including positions, assessment, what items to have, how to measure. Thank you for your assistance.
Nasgastric tubes are used to intubate the stomach and it is inserted from the nose to the stomach.The procedures includes:
a.Position of the client with pillows behind the shoulder
b. Determine which nosttril is more patent
c.Measure the length of the tubefrom the bridge of the nose to the earlobe to the xiphoid process and indicates this length with a piece of tape on the tube.
d If the client is conscious and alert give them swallow or drink water
e. Lubricate the tube with water soluable lubricant
f. Gently insert the tube into the nasopharynx and advance the tube
g. When the tube is neras the back of the throat istruct the client to swllow or drinks sips of water .If resistance is met slowly retate and aim the tube downward and toward the closer ear
h. Immediately withdraw the tube if any change is noted in clients respiratory status
i. Following insertuin abdominal xray study to confirm placement of the tube
j. Secure the tube with adhesive tapes
k. Observe the client for nauses,vomiting and monitor output.
l.Check the residual volues every 4 hours
m. Before instillation off any content aspirate stomach contents
n. Observe clients for fluid and electrolyte balance
