You wake up and discover that you ache and feel uncomfortable. You really want to go back to bed, but know that other members of the operating room team are depending on you to be there for a very full and busy day. You go to work, only to find that another member of the team is out sick and you’ll have extra assignments today. As you begin to prepare for your first operating room session, your nose starts running heavily and you start sneezing frequently. Do you keep on working? Do you tell your supervisor about your worsening condition and request to go home? What are the considerations that enter into your decision? How does surgical conscience contribute to your decision?

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANSWER

1)  Do you keep on working?

No, in this situation I wont work.

2) Do you tell your supervisor about your worsening condition and request to go home?

Yes, I do. I will inform my supervisor that am getting more sick and I need to go home.

3) What are the considerations that enter into your decision?

I am a nurse who is working in an operating room. So, if I am continuing to work with this running nose, there will be high chance for getting my infection to my patient especially in such a setting. Therefore, not only for my sake, but also for others, I have to leave the area.

4) How does surgical conscience contribute to your decision?

If we have a physical ailment, it will badly affect our mental ability. Lack of concentration, inability to stand continuously and so on. Also, reduces the standard of care and quality of care. Risk for infection to the patient also. So, better to leave the operation room as soon as possible.
