AIRWAY MANAGEMENT

DESCRIPTION OF SKILL

Airway management indicate a se of maneuvers and medical procedure to prevent and relieve airway obstruction

INDICATION

Respiratory failure

hypoxic or hypercapnic apnea rapid change of mental status

airway injuey

impeding airway compromise  

trauma to the larynx

high risk for aspiration

NURSING INTERVENTION

assess airway for patency and  normal or adventitious breath sounds

perform nasotracheal suctioning as necessary ,especially if coughis ineffective

use lubricated soft catheters for suction

hyper oxygenate before ,during and after suctioning prevents hypoxia

provide oxygen therapy to improve oxygen saturation and reduce possible complications

increase fluid intake to minimize muccosal drying

give medication as prescribed

provide postural drainage,percussion and vibration as ordered

PATIENT EDUCATION

teach the patient the proper ways of coughing and breathing(eg,take a deep breath and hold for two seconds,and cough two or three times in succession

educate that propersitting and splinting the abdomen promotes effective coughing

ambulation and frequent position change promotes lung expansion

educate the use of incentive spiromrtry

EVALUATION

increased air exchange

classify methods to enhance suction removel

COMPLICATIONS

hypoxia

Pneumonia

bronchospasam

tracheobronchial infection
