AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
DESCRIPTION OF SKILL
Airway management indicate a se of maneuvers and medical procedure to prevent and relieve airway obstruction
INDICATION
Respiratory failure
hypoxic or hypercapnic apnea rapid change of mental status
airway injuey
impeding airway compromise
trauma to the larynx
high risk for aspiration
NURSING INTERVENTION
assess airway for patency and normal or adventitious breath sounds
perform nasotracheal suctioning as necessary ,especially if coughis ineffective
use lubricated soft catheters for suction
hyper oxygenate before ,during and after suctioning prevents hypoxia
provide oxygen therapy to improve oxygen saturation and reduce possible complications
increase fluid intake to minimize muccosal drying
give medication as prescribed
provide postural drainage, percussion and vibration as ordered
PATIENT EDUCATION
teach the patient the proper ways of coughing and breathing(eg,take a deep breath and hold for two seconds, and cough two or three times in succession
educate that propersitting and splinting the abdomen promotes effective coughing
ambulation and frequent position change promotes lung expansion
educate the use of incentive spiromrtry
EVALUATION
increased air exchange
classify methods to enhance suction removel
COMPLICATIONS
hypoxia
Pneumonia
bronchospasam
tracheobronchial infection
