I have to do a nursking skill template about Trach suctioning can someone explain the description of trach suctioning and the indications of trach suctioning
Tracheal suctioning helps to remove secretions and mucus from the upper airways when the patients cannot clear the airways effectively. It can also be used to remove the secretions and mucus from the trachea and lower airways which is not cleared by coughing.
Suctioning is a harmful procedure that may cause tracheal trauma. To reduce the tear or any injury in the lining of trachea, the frequency of suctioning should be limited and not the suctioning time. The patient may feel short of breath and may cough during tracheal suctioning. However, it does not involve vomiting. Suctioning should not be painful. However, some cases reported that it can be painful. The suctioning time is not limited due to pain.
To ensure proper placement or the "suction catheter into the trachea, the following actions must be followed:
• Insert the suction catheter into the "pharynx”.
• Place "suction catheter into the "trachea" during "inspiration:
• Coughing is stimulated once the "suction catheter enters the "trachea”. If the catheter is not placed on “Inspiration”, It will enter into the “esophagus" and may generate "gagging or vomiting”.
