Bacterial cellulose:Current research

The organic compound produced by certain bacterias are used in medical ,textile and food industry .Various researches are ongoing in these industries to reap maximum benefits from bacterial cellulose .One such reserach is in biomedical industry.Since pure bacterial cellulose has certain limitations, bacterial cellulose composites are used in medical industries.Researches are being conducted in

1.wound dressing with anti microbial properties.Studies show that BC based wound dressing products are effective in aiding the healing process.

2.Tissue engineering: it is used as a scaffold in tissue engineering applications due to its low cytotoxicity, biocompatibility and 3D network structure

3.artificial blood vessels:researchers are trying to substitute pathologically damaged or clogged blood vessels with BC composites

4.peridontal tissue improvement in dentistry:membranes made up of BC composites are being used in tissue regeneration.

5.Controlled drug delivery:BC is studied to apply in delyed drug release.

6.Biosensors-many studies are conducted in using BC as biosemsors such as identifying blood glucose.

Comment:since the question does not ask a particular field, limited my anser to researches in medical industry

A large component of wood is cellulose. When burned, the energy from cellulose is converted in large part into heat and light, the matter in converted into water and carbon dioxide. compare and contrast this conversion to what occurs when glycogen is oxidized in cells to make ATP. Include two significant similarities and two differences.

Poplar wood contains 50% cellulose. Pure cellulose extracted from wood can enzymatically be converted to glucose C6H12O6 with 90% efficiency. Write down a balanced chemical reaction for the conversion of glucose to ethanol (CH3CH2 OH). Use this equation to calculate the theoretical yield of ethanol from one-ton of poplar wood. Calculate the actual yield of ethanol from one-ton of poplar wood if the fermentation efficiency (glucose to ethanol) is 95%. Determine the gasoline equivalent of ethanol in part C above.

Cellulose could provide an abundant and cheap form of glucose for humans.
Cellulose could provide an abundant and cheap form of glucose for humans. Why is cellulose not a source of nutrients for humans? Animals use starch and glycogen as an energy source, whereas plants use cellulose for energy. Cellulose digestion must occur in a basic environment, but the human gut is acidic. Humans cannot absorb the hydrolyzed form of cellulose. Humans, and most vertebrates, lack the enzyme cellulase. Vertebrate enzymes are unable to hydrolyze ( 1-4) linked glucose monomers.
