Workplace discrimination is very common now a days. Any discrimination based on gender, race, colour, religion, disability, sex, marital status, relationship status, and national origin comes under this category. Federal Laws are laid to avoid the discrimination. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are the concerning laws. To prevent workplace discriminations EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) keeps a vigilant eye across the country to enforce the federal laws.

Examples of discrimination are:

  • Job refusal
  • Being dismissed without proper reason
  • Denial of job advancements such as training opportunities, transfers and promotions
  • Unequal wages for equal work
  • Exclusion or isolation by co-workers
  • Taunts
  • Being given impossible tasks

An example of this can be a situation as follows:

A G A Y person Sam working in a call center office is often called as Princess by some of his fellow co-workers. This is a discrimination based on the sexual orientation of a person. This is not actually as per the ethical code and is a violation of the federal law.

Key indicators of this violation are the unfair treatment of the Sam by his co-workers.

A proper investigation can be done from the side of the internal committee should be carried out to inquire the matter. Employees should be interviewed about the matter.

Title VII of the civil rights act will be deemed to be violated in this case.

To minimize the future occurrence like this the company need to set a strong example before the employees. All the employees should be strictly addressed about the company’s policy and the consequences of not following the same.
