Alcohol withdrawl symptoms may vary from mild to moderate and then serious.the symptoms of alcohol withdrawl usually develops when individuals who addicted to alcohol stop it immediately. the symptoms usually involves generalized seizure, tremors, hallucinations, excessive sweating etc.  Oral benzodiazepines are the best used drugs for preventing a severe alcohol withdrawal syndrome, particularly the risk of seizures. Usually given for a maximum of 7 days, lorazepam is the drug of choice.

Managemnet of restless combative patient

  • Symptom control and supportive management
  • use of benzodiazepines to manage agitation and restlesness.
  • Correction of metabolic derangements.
  • Clinical reassessment to identify the symptoms.
  • Nutritional suppliments to overcome vitamin B6 and B12 deficiency.
  • Iv fluid suppliments.
  • Multivitamins containing or folate should be given routinely, and deficiencies of glucose, potassium, magnesium, and phosphate should be corrected.
  • Keeping the patient in NPO status during the time of extreme agitation to avoid aspiration.
  • Treatment of psychomotor agitation with benzodiazepines.
  • Keep the side rails up to prevent fall and injury.
  • Restrain the patient without harming him, in case of severe agitation.
  • Provide pdychological support.
  • health educate the client

Therapeutic effect of lorazepam

Lorazepam comes under the category of benzodiazepines. The drug act up on the central nervous system to produce a calm effect. This drug works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemicals such as Gamma Amino Butyric Acid. the drug cause central nervous system depression also.The drug also work as a norcotics. The drug is used to manage anxiety and agitation and acute panic attacks.the misuse or over dose can cause addiction, death and overdose.
