Expert Solution

Cholelithiasis also known as gallstones are formed when bile forms solid particles in the gallbladder.

Causes of gallstone include:

  • Increased serum cholesterol : Normally cholesterol:bile acid ratio in gall bladder is 1:25. This ratio is required to keep the cholesterol in liquid form as micelles. An increase in this ration results in precipitation of cholesterol crystals.
  • Bile stasis : somatostatin, octreotide, vagotomy, prolonged starvation or parenteral nutrtion result in stasis of bile in gall bladder.
  • Infections
  • Hemolysis : bilirubin production increases and it will cause formation of Calcium bilirubinate stones.
  • parasitic infestation with ascaris lumbricoides will cause formation of stones.

Treatment of cholelithiasis

1) Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Identify the boundaries of callot's triad and do a careful dissection.

2) Open cholecystectomy

Not usually done nowadays

3) Conservative management

sometimes cholesystitis managed conservatively with antibiotics and cholecystectomy done weeks later.

Diet affecting cholelithiasis

The main function of gakl bladder is store and concentrate the bile ,whenever fatty food reaches the Small intestine bile is secreted.
Food which are rich in high amount Fat, cholesterol and low amount fiber can precipitate the cholilitiasis. The extra cholesterol in the body can produce gall stones.example are Red meat, egg, junk foods.
The healthy food for patient with choliliathis are food that contain low amount of fat, cholesterol and high amount fibers like fruits, vegetable, lean meat ,fish.
