Lets discuss whether universities should go paperless or not. The issue that is currently being adressed is that most of the Universities are opting for paper based methods for Administrative, teaching and admissions work that is not beneficial to our environments and is a very tedious and manual work.

The possible solutions is to make repetitive paper based administrative purposes computerized and made available online.For example, admissions, attendance, student records, assignments, time table,academic calendar, holiday list,university staff payroll,file or document sharing, communication by mails and letters to the university etc .

These manual and paper based processes can be made available online and student and university details can be stored in university websites,databases etc in an online platform. Similarly, communications to the university can be done by emails instead of writing paper based mails and letters and sending through postal etc. Similarly exams can be made online and results can also be published online.Final degree certificates can also be published online that students can download.

Advantages are,

1. These online methods make Universities go digital and keep abreast with latest industrial trends of going online.

2. Reduce manual efforts and tedious paper work.

3. Save our environments by reducing the use of papers.

4. Increase efficiency and streamlines the processes.

For disadvantages and the processes that I would not recommend are the below:

1 Online methods should not be made compulsory from the beginning itself even though they are very efficient. This is because, many students and staffs are not computer literate and are habituated to paper and pen. They would need some time to upgrade themselves to go paperless. So, initially, paperless methods should be encouraged but made optional and time should be given to students and staffs to upgrade.

2. Universities where laptops and other connectivity cannot be provided to students, going paperless is not a wise decision. Students would need these minimum infrastucture to be set ready to go online and avoid paperwork.

3. Subjects like Botany, Arts and Painting, Biology,Engineering drawing, Zoology etc., that require paper and pencil to draw should not go paperless as its very diffucult to do such drawing through online tools.

So yes, we can modernize our learning in Universities and streamline it by going paperless but also look into the pain points of going paperless as listed above in the disadvantages.
