ETHICAL DILEMMA IN TEACHING
An Ethical Dilemma or ethical paradox is a decision making problem between two possible moral imperatives, neither of which is unambigously acceptable or preferable. It is an inner conversation with self concerning two or more available propositions . it is a choice between two or more courses of action when obstacles on each side hinder the decision as to which course to pursue. Teaching involves moral action.
The examples of ethical dilemma in the field of teaching :
1. The caring climate and formal climate > The caring climate promotes attention to individual and social needs , while formal climate emphasises adherence to organisational rules . Such tension can occur when a teacher has difficulty in deciding how to take best care for a pupil or how to respond to a colleague when they act against the rules.
2. The second type of ethical dilemma that can arise is the tension between distributive justice and school standards. Distributive justice refers to the fairness of outcomes as when teachers use principles such as equity to evaluate the justness or unjustness of outcome. school standards are criteria that schools apply for reaching certain decision . When these criteria are percieved as unfair when viewed against the outcome , an ethical dilemma arises. Teachers in this case must decide which principle of fairness is relevant in thsituation .
THINKING PREVENTIVELY : I the first case the teacher can focus on the caring climate more than formal climate and in the second case the teacher should follow the principle of justice rather than school rules.
LATERAL THINKING : lateral thinking or critical thinking is important in the second case because the teacher here fights for justness of the decision which can make the teacher go against the school rules which can be the prime concern.
