According to Tocqueville, even thought growing equality can and does foster liberty, too much equality can be a problem. In other words, gains in equality often mean a loss in liberty. Why is this?
Alexis De Tocqueville in his famous book "Democracy in America, Vol. II" described about equality and liberty in democratic nations. According to Tocqueville, citizens of democratic countries enjoy equal rights and treatment at work place, education and other activities. People wants equality as well as liberty The perfect equality foster fraternity, peace and development but it needs complete liberty. However, imperfect equality generates mistrusts, anger and violence in the society. The benefits of the equality is immediate in the society but benefits of liberty can be experienced in long run. Therefore, many countries prefer equality over liberty. The ill effects of liberty appears immediately but dark sides of equality is not imminent. Equality generates individualism in the society and individuals isolate themselves from macro social programs and confine themselves with friends, family members and close relatives. The individualism harms fraternity and mutual cooperation in the society that means loss in liberty. Equality also brings negative impact in political field and it spoils political freedom in a country. The egoism and individualism attitudes of people is generated from more equality and people do not bother about each others. This is dangerous for democracy To cope with dark aspects of equality, American people participates in public programs and talk about freedom and develop a sense of mutual dependence on each other Apart from this, many social organizations in US also generates awareness among people on social communication and its benefits.
