At a rapid response at your hospital the physician verbally orders a “bicarb drip in NS with 3 amps in it to start infusing as quickly as possible”. How many total mL will be in the IV bag if no fluid is removed in the compounding process?
a. _______________mL

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANSWER :

▪︎We have to prepare an isotonic solution for IV infusion

1 ampule of bicarb = 50 ml = 100mEq

So , 3 ampules = 300mEq

So, if 3 ampules added to 1 litre of NS = 300 milliosmoles/L

300milliosmoles is almost equal to body osmolality ( i.e.290 milliosmoles/L)

So , 3 ampules each 50 ml

Total = 50 × 3 = 150ml in 1L NS

1000ml + 150ml = 1150ml

Total 1150ml will be in the IV bag if no fluid is removed in the compounding process
