Sickle cell crisis occurs in persons affected with sickle cell anemia . Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder wherein the red blood cells acquire sickle shaped instead of the normal biconcave shape .

In Sickle cell crisis , the red blood cells which are sickle shaped clump and block the blood vessels which carry blood to different organs, bones, muscles . It is a painful condition which results in severe body pain, tiredness, anemia, swelling of extremities.

Nursing interventions for patient with sickle cell crisis :

Check vital signs especially respiratory rate and use of accessory muscles for respiration.
Monitor for skin changes for pallor, cyanosis.
Auscultate for the breath sounds.
Provide semi Fowler's position in case of dyspnea.
Oxygen therapy if the saturation levels are low.
Monitor intake output.
Assess the level and extent of edema.
Advice to increase fluid intake in the crisis stage as dehydration increases the hyperviscosity that can lead to increased sickling of RBCs.
Avoid travel by air and high altitudes that affects the shape of RBC .
Avoid smoking and alcohol.
Avoid contact with infected person as there is risk of infection.
Administer analgesics as prescribed.

Sickle cell crisis is a painful emergency condition which can caused decreased SPO2 levels causing dyspnea and affects other organs too and immediate attention and interventions is required to provide complications.
