Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Ordered - 16 units/kg/hour

Weight of patient is 180 pounds which is in kg is 81.64kg

Available ( pharmacy sends) - 40, 000 units in 1000 ml D5W

Ordered dose is 16 units /kg/ hour that means

In 1 kg ordered dose is 16units/hr

Then in 81.64 kg ordered dose will be = 16×81.64= 1306.24 units /hr

If 40, 000 units are in 1000 ml of solution

Then in 1306.24 units soution in ml will be = 1000×1306.24/40,000 = 32.65 ml as 1306.24 units given in one hour

Thus rate in ml / hr will be 32.65ml / hr round off will be 33ml/hr.

2. Ordered infusion rate = 5 units/ hr

Available is 100units in 250 ml of 0.9% NS

Then infusion pump ml/hr will be

As 100 units of it is in = 250 ml

Then 5 units will be in = 250×5/100 =12.5 ml

If 5units in one hour and 5 units is equal to 12.5 ml of solution then

Infusion rate in ml/hr is 12.5 ml/ hr round off will be 13 ml/hr

3. Physician has ordered 1 litre of D51/ 2NS to infuse at 150 ml/ hr

Infusion rate is 150 ml/ hr which means

150 ml of D51/2NS is to be administered in 1 hour or 60 minutes

Then 1 litre or 1000 ml will be administered in = 60×1000/150 = 400 minutes

If in 60 minutes = 1 hour

Then 360 minutes will have 6 hour and

400 - 360 minutes = 40 minutes

So time it will take to complete is 6 hours and 40 minutes .
