LEADERSHIP AND FOLLOWERSHIP METHODS TO MOTIVATES TOWARDS ACCOMPLISHING A HEALTH INFORMATICS VISION

The flip side of leadership is followership. It stands to reason that if leadership is important to performance, followership must have something to do with it too. But curiously, followership gets only a small fraction of the airtime that leadership does.

Leaders

· The responsibilities of managers and leaders within a group or organization are closely linked. Leadership is regarded by many as the ability to guide others into actions that meet the needs of the organization

· Health care leaders identify the needs of clients, establish what is required for health (for both individuals and organizations), and then encourage others to engage in actions that meet these needs.

· Leadership by individuals is evident throughout health care. Not all leaders are appointed to formal positions of leadership. Nurse leaders have the knowledge and skill sets required to assist individuals in leading healthy lives and to support health care organizations in building a quality health care system.

· Leaders communicate their vision for the future to others through a combination of words and actions. These health care leaders create and follow a vision for the future. Action is much louder than words alone. Leaders make a difference.

Followers

· Followership is frequently described as the “upward influence” of individuals on their leaders and their teams. The actions of followers have an important influence on staff performance and patient outcomes.

· Being an effective follower requires individuals to contribute to the team not only by doing as they are told, but also by being aware and raising relevant concerns.

· Effective followers realize that they can initiate change and disagree or challenge their leaders if they feel their organization or unit is failing to “promote wellness and deliver safe, value driven and compassionate care”.

· Leaders who gain the trust and dedication of followers are more effective in their leadership role.

· Everybody has a voice and a responsibility to take ownership of the workplace culture, and good followership contributes to the establishment of high-functioning and safety-conscious teams.

· “Effective leaders have a clear vision of what success will look like in a specific time period. They know how to plan for it, how to communicate and direct it, and how to implement it. They dream big and look forward to overcoming the challenges their vision will face.”

· Analyse the goals and break them down into smaller, measurable goals that can help and the team stay on track. When one approach or method for reaching goals doesn’t work, be prepared to make adjustments.

· Do not be afraid to set ambitious goals. Enthusiasm for excellence will be contagious, and may be surprised by how much the team can accomplish.

· Good leaders are a crucial part of an effective healthcare team. By communicating, listening and learning, being flexible, and having a vision, we can mold ourself into a valuable and respected healthcare leader.

In leader-Follower Relationships, all leaders exercise some measure of control over followers, it is easy to forget that leaders and followers are joined in relationships of mutual dependence. Leaders can accomplish nothing unless they can induce others to implement their decisions. Modern work organizations require conscientious compliance with a leader’s wishes in the absence of direct supervision.
