1.The ointment base is the substance or part of an ointment which serves as carrier for the medicine.An ideal ointment base should be inert, odorless smooth alao phys8cally and chemically stable ,also no discomfirt to skin that mean compatible to skin.

Classification of bases 1. Oleaginious bases these bases consist of water insoluble ,carbohydrate,vegetable oil, animal fat waxes , - petrolatum (soft parffine) - Hard paraffine also - Liquid paraffine is present

2 Absorption bases : generally an hydrous substance which have the property of water but still remain like ointment. In this 2 catagories 1 . Enulsified bases; wool fat, hydrous wool fat Bees wax. 2: water in pil emulsion.

3. Emulsion bases semisolis or have cream like consistancy both oil in water and water on oil (W/o) are used. o/w type are more popularit can easily remove from skin.

4.Water soluble base also called greaseless ointment base , contain water soluble PEG( poly ethylene glycol).
