Dictyosteliomycetes - A class of cellular slime molds.
Dictyosteliomycetes(dictyostelids) known for its multiple behaviour on availability or scarcity of food. When food is in abundant quantity, dictyostelids behave as individual amoebae, which grows normally. However, when the food supply is exhausted, they aggregate to form a multicellular assembly, called a pseudoplasmodium or grex. Under favouable circumstances the grex matures and form a sorocarp (fruiting body) with a stalk supporting one or more sori(ball enclosing numerous spores). Spores delelop into an active amoeba when food become available. This group is known for being used in genetics studies and cell communication.
Myxomycetes - A class of acellular slime molds.
The myxomycetes also called plasmodial slime molds or acellular slime molds, belong to group Amoebozoa. Myxomycetes are associated with a wide variety of different microhabitats and recorded from every terrestrial habitat. Specimens for study purpose can be obtained as fruiting bodies either under natural conditions in fields or cultured in the laboratory. These organisms are free-living predators of bacteria and other eukaryotic protists. The two trophic stages (amoeboflagellates and plasmodia) arising from haploid spores produced on fruiting bodies in the life cycle are usually cryptic, but the fruiting bodies are often large enough to be observed directly in nature. Fruiting bodies release airborne spores that are dispersed by air or by animal vectors. Both sexual and asexual reproduction occurs.
