List the various causes of diabetes
Define Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia and why an individual with diabetes would get each one
Describe management ideas for this disease
Answer:- Diabetes is of two types, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is caused when the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is caused because of several factors that includes lifestyle as well as genetic factors. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity, it can also be caused by insufficient production of insulin, production of defective insulin, or the inability of cells to use insulin properly and efficiently.
Hypoglycemia:- Hypoglycemia occurs when the level of glucose present in the blood falls below 4 mmol/L. Hypoglycemia can be caused by a too high dose of insulin, delayed meals, extended exercise or due to alcoholism.
Hyperglycemia:- Hyperglycemia is the medical term for abnormally high blood glucose level. Hyperglycemia is a hallmark sign of diabetes. Most common cause of hyperglycemia is diabetes, however it can also be caused due to several other reasons such pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, hyperthyroidism and Cushing's syndrome.
Individual with diabetes may become hypoglycemic if a too high dose of insulin is given to him/her. As explained above hyperglycemia is a hallmark of diabetes and diabetic people are hyperglycemic.
Diabetes can be managed by taking several important steps such as knowing about the disease. Knowing what to eat and when to eat helps a lot in management of diabetes. Stress can elevate diabetes, thus living a stress-free life is very important to manage diabetes. Making a diabetic meal plan with the help of a nutritionist and choosing foods that are lower in calories, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, and salt can help a lot in management of diabetes. Eating fibre rich diet with fruits is also important. A diabetic person should stay active and do exercise everday. This helps in reducing obesity and associated diabetes. Medication for diabetes should be taken regularly without fail. If a diabetic person follows a strict diet and all the above mentioned points then he/she will be able to manage diabetes efficiently.
