Scoliosis is mainly of three types- Idiopathic,Congenital and Neuromuscular. It is identified mostly before or after puberty in both males and females. The reason for scoliosis being more in females than in males is idiopathic. However, it may be a genetic tendency, or connective tissue adaption potential of childbirth in females.Another reason being the hormone Leptin which plays a role in bone metabolism via central and peripheral ways.
Females are also more likely to develop severe curves from scoliosis and thus scoliosis is more frequently identified in females than in males.
Females with scoliosis are likely to develop a curve magnitude of eight times more than males with scoliosis. Considering bone density issues, females require more precaution in placement of implants, post-op bracing and medications. Also, rarely, progression in scoliosis may lead to complications in childbirth. Thus, females often require more treatment than males diagnosed with scoliosis.
