Oxygen delivery/ oxygen administration:
Oxygen administration is the administration of a mixture of oxygen and other gases, administered to a patient to help him or her to breathe. Oxygen is an expensive medication mainly given to patients with hypoxemia. It can be given in high or low concentration.
Indications :
* Severe lower respiratory tract infections
example: Bronchiolitis , Severe Pneumonia.
* Severe asthma
* Upper airway obstruction
* Heart failure, cardiac arrest
* Carbon monoxide poisoning
* Birth asphyxia
* Anaemic hypoxia
* Post operative oxygenation
* Myocardial infarction
* Pulmonary hypertension
Principles
* If the Arterial Oxygen saturation ( SpO2 ) is less than 92 % , nurse can initiate the Oxygen therapy
* Humidified oxygen is recommended for the patient to prevent the dryness of nasal mucosa.
* Flow of oxygen delivery may depend on the condition and the age of the patient
* Accurate and regular monitoring of Oxygen saturation or Arterial Blood gas analysis is necessary.
* Hypoxemia as well as Hyperoxemia are harmful.
Contraindications
* Collapse of lung / Atelectasis
* Oxygen toxicity
* For patient with COPD (chronic bronchitis + emphysema + asthma )are at risk for hypoventilation, for such patients administer oxygen with caution.
Nursing Interventions:
* Check the patient identification properly with name,and ID number
* Check the physician's order and the dosage and if any specific precautions or positioning of the patient
* Check the diagnosis and need for oxygen delivery
* Monitor the vital signs of the patient, any clinical signs like Cyanosis, Arterial Blood gas analysis
* Check the patient's level of Consciousness, and the ability to follow instructions
* Check for suitable method of oxygen delivery, and any specific order such as oxygen via;
nasal catheter
nasal canula
oxygen by mask
Oxygen tent or oxygen hood
* Administer oxygen as per physician's order
