Fluid volume excess means there is an increases in fluid amount in the body greater than fluid need of the body.It is the fluid overload.

It is mainly caused by

  • Heart failure.
  • Kidney failure.
  • Cirrhosis of liver
  • In pregnancy is caused by hormonal imbalnce

Fluid volume indicated by

  • Oedema ,all over the body especially ankles,feet ,face and wrist.
  • Shortness of breath caused by entry of fluid into the lungs.
  • Hypertension caused by excess fluid in the bood stream.
  • Headache.
  • Stomach bloating.

Fluid volume excess may occurs as water intoxication and oedema.When there is an extracellular water in high amount with out high solutes results in dilution of extracellular fluid and move into cells.

  • Assess the intake out of the patient.
  • Assess the daily body weight.
  • Restrict sodium intake .
  • Elevate the odematous extrimity ,to enhance venous retrun.
  • Administer diuretics as prescribed.
  • Educate the patient the cause of fluid retention.
