1. Identify key changes during the toddler period and determine it's key physiologic basis.
2. Identify the immediate care and assessment to a newly delivered baby.
Toddlers fall under the age group of 1-3 years.
Major Milestones during this age:-
Physical Development:-
Weight Gain 3-5 pounds
Growth in Height 3-5 inches
Increased Strength and Coordination.
Cognitive Development:-
Recognition of familiar people and objects
Recall recent events
Imitate others
Learn letters, numbers, symbols and colours.
Social Development:-
Children develop strong bonds with loved ones
They like to be more independent.
They understand the difference between right and wrong.
Language Development:-
Their understanding progress faster then speech.
Toddlers understand 10 times more words than they can speech. By 2 years, children can speak 50-100 words in their vocabulary.
Sensory and Motor Development:-
Toddlers are likely to be in constant motion.
Walking will slowly progress to running and then to jumping and climbing. They can kick and throw balls and navigate stairs.
Fine motor skills in a toddler enables them to draw a straight line.
Psychological Development:-
According to Erikson's psychosocial development they are at the stage of AUTONOMY VS SHAME AND DOUBT.
According to Sigmund Freud, they are at ANAL STAGE of Psychosexual development. They attain bowel and bladder control at this age.
