The three main layers of a product that the marketer needs to understand to adequately serve the customer are :-

  1. Core product :- This layer of a product actually specifies all the provisions or benefits that it might provide to the customers who purchase the product. That is, it describes the level of satisfaction any customer can derive from the purchase of a particular product. Example :- Includes all the basic benefits provided by any product.
  2. Actual product :- The actual product specifies the various product designs, features and services any product would provide a customer. It actually specifies a particular product or a service. For example brand, packaging, tagging etc.
  3. Augmented product :- This layer specifies the actual product along with all its supporting features which may be provided by the firms to their customers for a higher level of satisfaction. For example :- warranty, maintainance, installation etc.
