Given a file of size 274 Mbits, a server holding the file with upload capacity 8 Mbps, 3 users wanting the file with upload capacities of 3, 3, and 4, and download capacities of 20, 27, and 17 (all in Mbps).
What is the minimum file distribution time (in sec) under peer-to-peer architecture? (answer to the 1st decimal places)
ANSWER:;
File Size = 274 Mbits
Server upload rate u = 8 Mbps
In peer to peer file sharing, when any peer receives file, he/she can also distribute the file to other peers using its own upload speed.
Minimum file distribution will take minimum time as maximum of
Initially server only has the file so server must send full file at least once to all links.
= 274/8 = 34.3 sec
Peer with minimum download rate will take maximum time in getting the file.
= 274/17 =16.1 sec
total upload capacity of the system means transferring file to all N peers using total upload capacity of server and all peers
= 3* 274/17 = 48.3 sec
So minimum time taken for distribution = 48.3 seconds.
