In order for the mutation to be passed to future generation, mutation needs to take place in sex cells or germ cells. A mutation in the germ cells (sperm and ova) will be passed to the next generation that it creates. This is because only the genes carried by sperm and eggs will be part of the offspring's genetic material.
Whereas if a mutation takes place in somatic cells, it will not be passed on to the next generation.
