6. We have 3 types of epithelial cells that are discussed in the chapter. Draw a squamous, cuboidal, and columnar epithelial cell arranged in a simple pattern as opposed to stratified. Then, explain why the cell shape is important to its function.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Simple epithelium is single layered and stratified epitheium is multi layered. Simple epithelium is present in the internal organs of the body and also present in the glands. Stratified epithelium is present in the regions of wear and tear and hence it is multi layered.

The shapes of the cells are different in different regions of the body depending on the function the epithelium performs. In the regions where diffusion of materials has to occur, the epithelium is squamous type as the diffusion can occur easily. In the regions where secretion is required most of the cells are either cuboidal or columnar depending on the space available. Small ducts that are narrow will have cuboidal epithelium which is simple.

Stomach glands and intestinal glands are columnar and have nuclei at the base of the cell. The columanr epthelial cells in intestine have microvilli to help in faster absorption of digested food. The columnar epithelium is ciliated in respiratory passages to push the dust particles with the mucus upwards.

STratified epithelium is multilayered t provide protection in the regions of the body where abrasion and loss of cells is possible.

So the structure and cell shape is is important to the function of the epithelial tisues.

CFTR is present in many other types of epithelial cells, including in the lung and in the pancreas. Cholera does not typically affect these tissues, since infection occurs in the gut, and cholera toxin does not move into the bloodstream. However, some people have a mutation in CFTR that decreases its activity, and thus reduces the release of chloride ions from the cytosol of epithelial cells into the lumen of these organs. Which of the following are the most likely...

As we have discussed several times in class, cells need to be close to a source of oxygen and nutrients in order to survive. In chapter 12 we discussed Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination. We all have them, and acknowledging them is important, and often uncomfortable. For your final Reaction paper, I would like you to think about a specific stereotype or prejudice you hold. In this chapter, we have discussed how markets work. Recently some new markets have emerged that focus on sharing of durable goods among a wider circle of users. The rise of these sharing markets may well have an impact on the relationship between the economy and the environment. What are the market niches these firms have found?
