Why do we need to produce sperm and eggs (gametes)?

Explain why all sexually reproducing organisms need both haploid and diploid cells.

Solutions

Expert Solution

We need to produce gametes in order to carry out sexual reproduction. And sexual reproduction is important to create variations among living organisms. Gametes are haploid cells which are formed via meiosis and both male and female gametes fuse to form zygote.

We need both haploid and diploid cells because:

Haploid cells(gametes) formed via meiosis to carry out reproduction process. Haploid cells fuse to form zygote.

Diploid cells(somatic cells) are formed via mitosis to carry out normal functions of organism.
