According to Wikipedia, doping refers to the use of drugs for enhanced performance in sports. The use of illegal substances in sports arena is increasing steadily although the counter measures taken to prevent this is also in the rise. This only means that even sports is not taken sportively and that people look for shortcut to fame.
History sheds some light on famous sports personalities involved in the scandal. Two such examples, Tyson in athletics and Diego Maradona in football. Both of them were brilliant sportspeople but took a short cut and paid their prices in different ways.
Tyson is an American track and field sprinter who is regarded next to Ussain Bolt in the athletic world. He normally competes in 100 and 200 meter sprints and maintains a personal best of 9.69 seconds in 100 meter sprint.
He was tested positive for drugs in 2013 by the US anti-doping agency and was suspended for a year. He had to return his silver medal that he won in 2012 London Olympics in 4*100 meter relay. He pleaded guilty and he was forgiven and he is back on track.
No one would have forgotten football legend Diego Maradona who with his hand off God won football world cup for Argentina. During 1994 world cup he was tested positive in the second test and expelled from participating in the game anymore. The result, he became an addict and went in the verge of death. He slowly recovered but not in full.
Reasons for using substances in sports.
1. Sport is not sport anymore - A sportsman prepares for that particular sport for years. He slowly starts building a kind of aggression that he should win at any cost because winning that event may change his life forever. All the glamourous things such as, money, fame and status all blinds him and he looks for short cuts, the result is obvious, using substances.
2. Dear of failure
Most people do some thing silly out of fear of failure. The effort that they put in is one thing but the thought of whether he will win shatters his entire confidence level and the result, using substances.
3. Mental instability
Most people get into this struggle has got some mental instability although they are physically strong. They keep thinking and at one point the thought becomes an action, using substance. These people regret their act later because they acted on their obsessive compulsive disorder.
Is only the individual responsible or the entire organisation such as the government, the sports authority, the coach and the fellow sports persons. The need of the hour is going back and spending equal amount of time to inculcate ethical practices in the minds of the sorts people.
