- The alternative medications for
patients who have allergy to penicillin can take the following
drugs,
- Fluoroquinolones - example is
ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin.
- Tetracyclines - eg. Doxycycline,
minocycline.
- Macrolides like azithromycin,
clarithromycin.
- Aminoglycosides like
gentamycin.
- Glycopeptides like vancomycin.
For sinusitis for a 20 year old
client with sickle cell disease,
- Nasal decongestant - oxymetazoline
nasal drop or saline nasal drop can be used.
- Cough suppressants - especially
mucolytics are given to soothen the mucus.
- Antihistamines like citerezine
hydrochloride 5 or 10 mg tablet during night.
- NSAIDs ( Non steroidal anti
inflammatory drugs) like diclofenac and ibuprofen which are safe
drugs to be taken in sickle cell disease.
- Analgesic - morphine is the drug of
choice to relieve pain in clients with sickle cell disease.
- Penicillin as well as other
antibiotics can be taken to prevent and stop the growth of
bacteria.
Note : some patients may have
allergic to penicillin lile drugs but it is safe to use penicillin
in sickle cell disease patients who are undergoing treatment for
sinusitis.
