food loss and waste remove about - of food meant for human consumption globally
food loss and waste remove about 1/3rd (1.3 bn tonne/year) of food meant for human consumption globally..
Food waste and loss is a major global problem. This loss includes both post harvest loss hof grains as well as waste of out of plate food from household kitchen. food loss includes decrease of food either quantitavily or qualitatively due to actions of food suppliers, Whereas food waste includes decrease in food either quantitavily or qualitatively due to actions of retailers or consumers.
Post harvest loss of grain includes loss of grain due to
poor transport facility
Poor storage due to lack of enough cold houses
attack of rodents and other insects
Out of plate waste of cooked or processed food happens because of poor dietary habbits. Food waste also happens due to low shelf life (expiry) of processed food.
Reducing this loss is very important for global food security especially in view of stagnant or low cultivable land and huge population increase every year. Considering importance of saving this loss. the sustainable development goal (SDG) has set a target of reducing this per capita food waste to half till 2030.
