Upon entering the room a nurse observes a older patient pulling on the IV line, oxygen tubing and foley catheter. The patient also has a diagnosis of tuberculosis. 1. Describe environmental hazards that pose a risk to the patient's safety. 2. Identify methods to reduce physical hazards and the transmission of pathogen. 3. What type of room assignment should the nurse place the patient in? 4. The patient has an order for abdominal and chest x-ray. How should the patient be transported to the diagnostic department with a diagnosis of TB?
Answer:
1. Describe environmental hazards that pose a risk to the patient's safety.
The environmental hazards that pose risk to the patient safety as the patient is having Tuberculosis.
There could be difficulty in breathing as the patient removes the oxygen tubing. This also increases the risk of short of breath. The another major risk to the patient safety is the risk of disease transmission. The removal of catheter causes bacteria to spread all over as tuberculosis is a communicable disease. The IV line removal also causes incomplete dose or dose error which could make bacteria more resistive towards the treatment.
2. Identify methods to reduce physical hazards and the transmission of pathogen.
To removes the oxygen tubing, pulling of IV line and foleys catheter reduce physical hazards and transmissions of pathogens
3. What type of room assignment should the nurse place the patient in?
The nurse has to assign the treatment in special isolation room to reduce transmission of tuberculosis.
4. The patient has an order for abdominal and chest x-ray. How should the patient be transported to the diagnostic department with a diagnosis of TB?
The patient has to be transported with all universal precautions especially mouth and nose should cover with face mask.
