Considering a geyser in a home, classify each of the
following as an open system, closed system, neither or both:
(a) the geyser is being filled with cold water
(b) hot water is being drawn from the tap
(c) the geyser leaks
(d) the heater is turned on to heat the water
(e) the geyser is full and the heater is turned off.
A open system is one which can exchange both mass and heat with the surroundings. Hence heat and mass of the system varies with time.
A closed system is one which can exchange only heat with the surroundings. No exchange of mass takes place and hence mass of system remains constant over period of time.
A system is neither open or closed if there is no exchange of mass and heat with the surroundings.
Let Geyser be considered as a system with cold tap ,hot tap and heating element attached to it as surroundings.
Based on the above definition of system and surroundings we can classify the below
(a) the geyser is being filled with cold water : Open system as both heat and mass enter the system through cold tap. Heat and mass vary over a period of time.
(b) hot water is being drawn from the tap : Open system as both
heat and mass leave the system through hot tap. Heat and mass vary
over a period of time.
(c) the geyser leaks: Open system as both heat and mass leave the
system through leakage. Heat and mass vary over a period of
time.
(d) the heater is turned on to heat the water: : Closed system as
only heat enters the system through the surrounding heating
element, while mass does not leave the system.
(e) the geyser is full and the heater is turned off : Neither open
or closed (isolated ) as there is no exchange of mass and heat with
the surroundings
