Discuss the pros and cons of the federal, state, and local government funding human service programs. Should they continue to do so, or should it be the responsibility of concerned citizens to “care for their own”?
One of the most important responsibility of the government is to act as welfare states. This would mean that it has the responsibility to provide food, shelter, healthcare, etc. when they themselves are not able to get on their own. This would mean that in a highly stratified society, certain people would be always disadvantaged and they would experience poverty, unemployment and lack of access to the much-needed services such as, education and healthcare. Thus, it would help those who are disadvantaged to lead a decent life. However, it would require those who earn more to contribute to the betterment and programmes of the government which would make them resent it because they wouldn’t like to share their money for those who do not earn it. It would also require the government to spend more on the welfare programmes in order to fight poverty, unemployment and homelessness.
