Check whether the indicated application is best represented by an open-loop or closed loop control system model.  If you think there is some ambiguity, discuss as necessary.

APPLICATION (2 Points each)

OPEN LOOP

CLOSED LOOP

Standard LED flashlight

Antilock Braking System (ABS) in a car

Distance traveled by fireworks, i.e. bottle rocket

DVD player disc rotation speed

Cruise control in a car

Turning on a faucet in a sink

Automatic flash used in your smart phone camera

Accelerator pedal in a car

Thermostat

TESLA Motors  almost  self-driving car

Flushing a toilet cycle of operation

Outcomes-based  assessment process for this course or an industrial engineering project design review

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) LED flashlight : Open loop since no feedback present to tell amount of brightness required for use

2)ABS :Closed loop since have feedback

3)Fireworks : Open loop clearly as it goes in one direction which we cannot control as there is no feedback

4)DVD speed : Clearly Closed loop because through remote we can fast forward or slow down the rotation speed or we can control the rotation via inbuilt feedback system controlled via remote

5)Cruise control of car :Open loop because of a person is required to control car and car does not cruises on its own

6)Faucet in sink : Open loop as once it is opened it cannot get closed by itself

7)Auto flash : Closed loop because the light sensors based feedback automatically detects the need of flash while clicking the photos

8)Accelerator : Open loop system as it does not have any feedback or sensor to work automatically

9)Thermostat : Closed loop system

10)Tesla car : Closed loop as includes feedback in form of sensors that provide self driving mechanism

11)Toilet Flushing : Open Loop system as no feedback to decide how much water should be used to get required output or flushing done

12)Design Review : Closed loop system because since we are doing review here so we are capable to provide feedback and change things so system is closed one

13)Prosthetic hand : Closed loop
