the nurse caring for a 3 month infant who has been diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot. He begins crying and suddenly turns blue. Answer the following questions :
Answer: Tetralogy of Fallot is a condition of heart defects at birth. The pathophysiology involves as due to the poor nutrition, genetic factors during pregnancy when the fetus heart is developing. This causes heart defect in the four chambers of the heart. The pulmonary valves get narrowed and hence causes poor supply of oxygen to the lungs. This causes breathing problems and insufficient amount of blood and oxygen reaches to the all parts of the body.
The colour of the skin turns blue because of alck of supply of oxygen and blood. The very less amount of blood is being pumped to all over the body.
The primary intervention is to provide sufficient amount of oxygen and enabling the oxygen to reach to the lungs. The surgery is the primary option to correct the defects to prevent the life threatening issues.
Nurse should include in the documents about the heart rate. Monitor the vital signs of the baby. Providing sufficient amount of oxygen support.. It is important to report to the cardiologist regarding the child's inability to breath properly.
