A nurse is caring for a 3 month old infant who has cleft of the soft palate which of the following actions should the nurse
ANSWER: discontinue feeding if the infant's eyes because watery.
As the 3 months infant have cleft of soft palate , so the infant is more chance of suffering of choking or aspiration during milk during feeding and the watery eye may be sign of choking or aspiration of milk. So it is better if the feeding is discontinued.
Other option like elevate the infant head to attend 10 degree angle during feeding is irrelevant beacuse 10 degree head elevation position is not sufficient to safe feeding . It is recommended that if feeding is done in upright position. Actually 10 degree elevation of head with right lateral tilt is used in case of adults to incidence reduction of hypotension and sensory block.
Other option is incorrect because as the 3 months infant need more energy so feed the infant 5- 6 oz of formula 4-5 times a day.
Other option is also wrong , as infant with cleft palate needs more burp in comparison to normal infants , so the idea of postpone burping untill after completing each feeding is not of use.
Only 3rd option is correct.
